White smoke fills my vision and curls around me, thin, twisting tendrils of cold smoke blindly seeking my flesh like blood worms questing for warm meat.

“No!”

The voice is my mother’s, but it is not her normal voice, quiet, deep, steady as my metronome. This time her voice has a raw, jagged energy that pricks at the center of my heart. I’ve heard that sound before in my own voice.

It is the sound of fear.

The white smoke has found me. It rushes in and engulfs me and everywhere it touches becomes pain.
